TOURISMO: An Innovative Model for Sustainable Management of Tourist Flows
In recent years, tourism growth has often overlooked the impact on local territories, exacerbating phenomena such as overtourism and pressure on infrastructure. To address these challenges, TOURISMO – TOURism Innovative and Sustainable Management of flOws was launched, a project funded by the Interreg Euro-MED program of the European Commission, dedicated to transnational cooperation in the Mediterranean area.
Objectives
TOURISMO aims to implement an innovative and sustainable approach to managing tourist flows. By integrating advanced technological solutions and real-time monitoring tools via the Snap4City platform, developed by the DISIT Lab at the University of Florence, the project enables analysis of visitor density and behavior, promoting strategies to reduce impacts on destinations and improve the quality of the tourist experience.
Key objectives include:
- Implement innovative technological solutions for sustainable tourism flow management in 8 high-pressure MED pilot sites.
- Monitor and analyze tourist flows with advanced tools, supporting evidence-based and sustainability-oriented decision-making.
- Protect cultural and natural heritage, while ensuring high-quality visitor experiences.
- Promote active stakeholder engagement in a shared development process.
Infoday Workshop in Florence
To showcase the project and its initiatives, each pilot site will host Infoday Workshops. The Florence Infoday Workshop will take place on February 11, 2025, at the Firenze Welcome Center, offering an overview of the project’s objectives, activities, and expected results, with a focus on the Florence pilot and transnational pilot experiences.
The event provides a unique opportunity to discuss:
- Methodologies developed within TOURISMO.
- Emerging challenges in the tourism sector.
- Active dialogue among key stakeholders about the future of responsible tourism, locally and internationally.
Participation contributes to shaping a sustainable and innovative tourism management model, addressing contemporary challenges and enhancing the well-being of local communities.
